Gambeson

Gambeson

A Gambeson was both over and under the chainmail Worn, or of less wealth, as the sole armor. The word Gambeson originally came from French and replaced the German word Rüstwams as a supposedly "authentic" word from the 1990s. Today every re-enactor understands what Gambeson means, a padded jacket that is usually worn under the armor. Under armor jacks is nowadays rather a less or not at all padded upper part worn under the plate equipment and on which the chain parts like Chain protector, Chain neck protector and Voiders Respectively. Aketon is another term for the Gambeson which however disappears more and more.
