The Order of St. John found its origin in Jerusalem at the beginning of the 12th century and was also known as the Knights Hospitaller. Although the protection of pilgrims in the Holy Land was the basic concern of the Order of St. John it ultimately developed into one of the most powerful orders of knights of that time. The Hospitaller Surcoat was one of the main distinguishing features of the order. The white cross on the otherwise completely black tunic, which was attached in the middle of the chest, was striking.
